How good are VW mechanics?

Took my Roc to VW to have minor issue investigated today, VW mechanic said he took the car out for a drive but couldn't replicate the reported issue.

What he didn't know was that I'd taken note of the mileage when I dropped it off. When I collected the car, the mileage had increased by 1/4 mile............that's 400 meters!

This is probably the distance from the customer car park to their workshop and back............Took it out for a drive my a*se!

Haha, you certainly wouldn't expect them to be that daft would you? At my local stealers that would be a £70 "investigation fee" which is charged when they can't find any problem. I guess 9/10 of their customers don't do sensible things like record mileage so they get away with it.

Ah, the old 'there's nothing wrong with it sir, we couldn't find any fault', that would be £70 please.

If you're paying £70 - tell them you want them to drive the car for an hour in various conditions, not a 2 minute trip down the road and back.

As for the original question 'How good are VW mechanics' - it varies a LOT. Some dealerships will have great mechanics, who take some pride in their work and will go the extra mile....others will have a chimp with a wrench, who doesn't care about their work and will do anything to get the job done quickly...usually such dealerships will also have specially trained service staff - trained especially in the art of lying and deception.

Oh with £70 on the line I want to go with the alleged "technician" and make damned sure he spots the problem!

Luckily i got a flagship dealer near me and even had a technician join me on a test drive. I really rate my local dealer.

Even though my local VW dealer is pretty good (they were a massive help when I found out my clutch had a faulty part), they have shown signs of being a bit clueless.

They keep calling me telling me that my "timing belt" is due for a change. When I point out to them that my car has a chain, and not a belt, the mechanic supposedly goes to talk to his superior and says "sorry for the error".

This has happened three times... I wonder what happens if I give them the money to change it, do they pretend it was changed?
