Smoke from exhaust..

Hey guys,
Just has a quick query.. My 09 Rocco 2.0 TDI 170 has had its engine light on recently.. the checks all said secondary water pump.. a few days later i started to get smoke from the pipes when driving and putting my foot down! No the light has since just gone off itself and the smoke stopped for a while. but this morning the smoke has reappeared and its quite bad at times! Now this morning i turned the fans on and the A/c came on.. but atm the a/c doesnt work but i noticed that when the a/c was on the car smoked a lot more?
does anyone know what this may be? or is it just in my head thinking the a/c is causing the smoke!
I've been to,d it might be the DPF regenerating as it doesn't happen all the time?
