Does Bluetooth retrofit need coding

Hi guys, I have a 2009 GT TDi and purchased a Bluetooth retrofit kit off eBay. Upon connecting everything up the RCD 510 does not display Bluetooth as being installed. I contacted the seller and he says the car needs coded in vagcom. Unfortunately I don't know anyone who can do this so wanted to ask online if this is definitely correct?
I previously retrofitted Bluetooth to my sisters Scirocco a couple of years ago using another kit off eBay (unlikely to be the same seller) and it worked straight away out of the box.
I am a bit worried the kit I have is not compatible with my car. Please help?
