A day @ the track (in sweden)

Just had my Scirocco at the track for the first time...

Obviously I knew that I would like it. What I didn't know was that I actually would loved it. The car is amazingly easy, predictable and neutral.

I'm used to drive cars that are understeered and I first thought that the Rocc was oversteering all the time until I realized a few laps later that it acutally was as close to neutral as it could be. I had my 18" Nitroz wheels with Michelin PS2 | 225/40-18" on. The tires impressed me alot. I usually have R-tires when at the track but the PS2 are as close as u can get for daily use and a few trackdays every year.

Allthough after 6-7 laps they get noticably warm and looses some traction but thats when the chassi really impressed me. Even though I pushed hard and carelessly eased of the throttle in the middle of long curves the car hung in there and was truly predictable all the time. No sudden tailwhips or other hard to predict slides or moves. The understeering came gradually and kindly. The combo of the car and the PS2 tires was a 9 on a 10 scale..

Here's a few pics from the day.....

Good to hear that it handles that well. :D
I would love to take my roc to the track. But there's no track nearby.

thanks a lot mk3Mike! Very valuable info to me..

I'm thinking about going to a track in France (Dijon) this summer but I wanted to get the minimum preparation done. I suspect the all-season P Zero Neros will be nothing but terrible on the track!!!

Apart from an upgrade in tires, do you recommend a brake upgrade as well? How did the stock brakes hold up on the track? Were the cool down sessions enough to get you going for another 3-4 laps?

Otherwise, I suspect I will have to upgrade to the R32 brakes, at least the fronts for a first run at the track. For tires, I plan on getting track dedicated R compounds and I will change them out at the track. Thanks for your input in advance.

Never done a track day in a car but I did Mallory park some years back on a GSXR 750

The track surface is not like normal roads & neither is the speed you take the corners

I was on normal road compound Michelins which developed bubbles after a couple of laps and ended up with strips of rubber coming off the edges

A guy I saw on a Fireblade wearing Michelin High Sports killed a new set of tyres in a couple of hours

So I guess my advice, especially if you've got a long drive to the track, is take some spare hoops for the trip home at least

Hello!

About the brakes, I'd say I'm quite hard on the brakes since I've done quite a few trackdays. The brakes held up just fine. I'm actually pretty impressed but I would still like an upgrade hence me being used to porsche brakes. Then again, what is the main purpose of the car? I guess a pair of sport pads would do just great..

Have you had the chance to try your car at the track yet?

no, I was delayed a bit because I broke my arm :( so my first track day will have to wait a bit.

The purpose of the car is leisure really, since I can take public transport in the city to work rather easily. It's not a pure track car but I'd like to do 3-4 track days a year. I wouldn't mind trying out the stock brakes with some track pads to see how they hold up, I was too scared they would be completely burned up in 2 laps. On my "spirited" driving up on the Swiss mountains here, I can already the stock pads soften up quite a bit and substantial fade but maybe some better pads would solve this issue without breaking the bank on a brembo setup.
