I really like the looks of the Scirocco, more than the R32 (although that is very cool in an understated way) but I can completely see your point about wondering if you should have had an R32 - the noise they make even as stock is fantatstic. My girlfriends considering a new car and I am trying to convice her of the merits of an R32 so we can have the best of both worlds. There seem to have been some cracking deals on them as well recently. Still, at least you have got access to one to have a play with every now and then.

Tell her to buy one

but make sure she insures you! See the thing is will VW ever put that engine in another hatchback? Its really tempting to buy one and cherish it, there is something nice about having a big engine that is smooth and gutsy, I love the Roc but so many people get a 2.0 and strap a turbo to it, mine gave a grin today though if you change under full throttle (DSG) at about 5000-5500 rpm it lets out a bit of pop and bang, it made a young girl scream ha ha (well i thought it was funny)

Not in the slightest, thats why i get fed up with the scirocco as in reality it should have no excuse, the golf is completely planted and very well balanced, but then it is awd

Ive just swapped from a 54 plate A3 3.2 v6 quattro sline dsg which was essentially a Mk5 R32 badged up as an Audi. It was a fantastic car and as youve said the engine sounds fantastic with low down torque thats astonishing.
I drove a brand new r32 when i was looking for a new car but have to admit i wasnt really hooked on the car like i was the Roc. I got offered a brand new R32 with all the toys on for nearly six grand of list price and i believe that all the dealers are offering similar deals in order to clear the cars. I believe that they have stopped using the v6 engine as its pretty damn thirsty and was getting increasingly hard to get through the evertightening emission laws. In standard guise they used to knock out 250bhp which VAG can quite comfortably get from the 2.0 turbo which is a much cheaper and lighter unit and offers more scope for future tuning/amendments, Hence were getting the R20's.
Personally im over the moon with my GT Roc and am still enjoying that in gear mid revs turbo whoosh, and im pretty damn sure it wouldnt be too far behind the R32 or A3 in terms of performance. The other benefit is that i reguarly see 40+ mpg on my way to work now as the engine offers fantastic driveability when you dont want to sap every last drop of power out of it. With the 3.2 i could never get more than 26/27mpg no matter how hard i tried.
I just dont think the mk5 R32 holds the same sort of aura as the Mk4 did either, they just appear to blend in to the crowd a little too much for me.
All that said i doo quite fancy a R32 with the supercharger conversions you can get which pushes power past 350bhp....screw fuel economy!

Hi all,
have just read this thread whilst looking for the answer to understeer on my R32 and thought I ought to answer the post by "turbo". I new on this forum and have joined only to answer the question asked. I do find that the R32 understeers like it has a small elephant sat on the bonnet, it is manageable but annoying and I have just found some reasonably inexpensive cures. I am personally going to try a set of Eibach hollow anti roll bars to cure it.
To Andy500, I have just had a remap that is claiming just short of 300bhp out of a standard R32 and I must say it certainly feels somewhere up in that region to drive, I am going to have a dyno run in August and the results will be posted on R32OC if anyone is interested.
