Brake fault

Hi guys,
I had something strange happen while I was driving last friday, and was wondering if anyone had experienced anything similar.

On the M25 (slow moving traffic), nothing abnormal happening .i.e no heavy braking or weird accelerating patterns etc, and suddenly, I hear a beep and one of the warning lights on my dash came on, and the message on the MFD said "Brake fault: Workshop"... all this happened for about 2 secs, and all messages and warning lights disappeared as quickly as they appeared.
I was pretty baffled and VERY worried, so I tested my brakes immediately, and they still worked fine. I wasn't able to see exactly which warning light came on (except the fact that it was yellow/amber).
I drove it all the way home (east london), and it didnt happen again. Also drove it back to bristol the following day and no issues either. I havent had the time to hook it up to VCDS to get the fault codes out.

Has anyone had this happen?

Not much experience in this - but could it be something to do with the pads? I though the warning light was yellow for this but i could be wrong

Thanks Phil,
This was exactly what I thought - but my car has just been for a service, and I thought they checked the brakes as part of their "free" visual inspection. I also thought the warning light would stay on if it was the pads.

I will hook it up to VCDS, I suspect it's the pads. The car had about 45k miles and I dont think the brakes have been changed... Pretty impressive from the pads, though I am not one of those drivers who constantly slams on the brakes

EDIT: Had a quick look on google, you are right, I think it's my pads that are on the way out! They must still have a while to go if the light went out. Hopefully will change them in a few months :)

Interesting Fault code generated, it seems my pads aren't the issue:

I am not an expert, but it seems I got a voltage spike on my battery. This has been a recurring theme since I've had this motor.
This seems plausible, as the incident happened as I was winding my windows down, and perhaps that put heavy demand on the alternator as I was moving off at the same time.

I think it's high time I changed my battery
