What does the water pump run off?

Hi guys, I had a front end bump in my 2.0 tsi and it's in the garage through the insurance. The garage have told me they have had to replace the alternator and the water pump, although I think I had a problem with water pump before the bump. Are either of the 2 powered by the timing chain? I'm asking as if they are then I want to make sure they have checked the tensioner as I know this is a problem with the tsi.

Thanks in advance, john

On a chain driven engine the water pump is driven off the crankshaft pulley using the auxillary belt along with the alternator and the air con compressor.

Thanks for the reply, at least I know the chain won't be affected.

That's not quite right pal, it's driven off a belt at the crank underneath the intake manifold :-)

As for the timing chain tensioner, what year is the car??

It's a 58 so 2009 I think! Why do you ask?

Just wondering as I had issues with my tensioner recently, I would get it changed as a precaution tbh.
Here's a link to my post, also click on the vw and skoda forum links on my post :-)

How much did that cost if you don't mind me asking?

The parts in total cost me £38 (trade) took me around 4 hours to replace, not a bad job tbh.

That's not too bad. I have no mechanical experience with engines at all though so don't think I'd dare temp it! My step dad is an ex mechanic though and I'm an aircraft fitter so between us we could probably manage it. I'll have a look into it. Cheers, John

This Will help you pal:-

I didn't replace the timing chain cover, just cleaned the old one and applied new sealant, don't have any leaks so that's fine. The most difficult part is the bottom crank bolt, I have a snapon impact gun which managed to remove it :-)

Just looked at a how to and don't think I'll be doing that! Removing the crank bolt and an engine mount is a bit out of my league I think! Did you need the special vw crank tool?

Yeh it's the best way to insure it's tight....
A good indi should do the job for less then £300, which is around the same for a timing belt change on most cars :-)
