It could be any number of things as the light coming on just means the lambda probe has detected too rich a mixture. You need to get it scanned to.identify the source but it's unlikely to actually be the catalytic convertor. The light is actually to protect the cat as it can be damaged if unburnt fuel is dumped into it.
Just noticed you have a diesel. Is it the DPF light that has come on? If so you can forge a regen by driving at a constant 2,500 rpm for about 20 mins.
Best thing to do is get it scanned for the fault.
