Has anyone had this work carried out by a main dealer. I was quoted £100.00 to diagnose the problem then £47:00 if they do the work to fix it, Sounds a bit steep for what I think is only as adjustment.

What on earth do they do for that money. Any advice gratefully received. The normal fixes don't work for me.

You sure these are not the black rubber bump stops? If this is the case they are only £5.49 each and easy to replace.

Hi Skip thanks for the reply, Yes I've done that but with no joy and adjusted many times. It's only on the drivers side. Manageable with music on :-) but it's still there , annoying!

No worries, a little bit surprised on that one. I do remember there were some corrosion issues on the tailgate early Rocs, but apart from that the bump stops that have caused issues (including for myself) I don't know of any other faults.

Thanks. I've had another look at the link you supplied and tried and adjustment on the other bumper stop to see if that helps. Be nice to see what the vw tech ref actually gets the mechanics to do to address the problem but don't where to get that info from.

Apart from this it's a great car and I came from a Jag. I was lucky that the previous owner was a GP so was fully loaded.

No problem homeform. Yes - My car had an annoying rattle from the tailgate and I noticed last year when I was washing the car. As I put pressure on the offside part of the tailgate, I noticed there was more 'play' than the nearside. I played around with the bump stops by using the allenkey and to amazement it worked - noise gone.

Earlier this year, one of them broke completely, so I got 2 replacements from VW (£5.49 each). It is worth trying to adjust these before letting the dealer loose on your car.

Thanks again Skip. so just to confirm you solved your problem purely by adjustment to the bump stops?

Hi homeform, yes indeed - I adjusted the bumpstops using a very small allenkey and adjusted it until both sides of the tailgate were even. There is better explanation on here somewhere about the precise procedure here, think the link I posted yesterday may contain more info.

Thanks. Yes I've noticed the gap between the closed boot hatch on either side is different. Using the gap between the boot hatch and rear light as a guide. Will start there :-)

I posted on Sirroco net too but got nothing on there. All the experts on here then ?

Yes - just push on the tailgate just above the rear light cluster and you should be able to feel movement on the tailgate, that is. Ire than likely causing the rattle, and as you have experienced, it is really annoying.

I have a sign in to SciroccoNet also, but rarely go on on there, the majority of the knowledge is on Central :-)

So, sorry to state what maybe the obvious , there should be no play or give when I press down on either side over the light cluster?

No worries, correct - there should be no movement (or very little). If there is play, you should be able to replicate the rattle you hear.

Hi Skip, spent some time on this since we last posted. No play and new bump stops installed and adjusted. I'm wondering now if it may the gas strut on that side ......or possibly the boot catch?

The journey continues :-)

Hi homeform,
What noise do you get/when does it come on? I've tried bump stops, numerous visits to VW and called no joy. So I'm really struggling to get rid. What does the tpi pertain to?

Hi drfez, it's not a constant noise and only over some bumps. Motorways and good condition roads are fine. It's like a metal sounding rubbing / rattle of metal on metal. It's only on the left side at the moment and I'm looking at gas struts next. I've copied below an excellent link to a posting on the Sirroco net site that contains more information from one owner and some excellent instructions on how he fixed his issues. I haven't tried these yet but let me know how you get on any way. Hope it's helps

Sorry forgot to add that the TPI is a technical bulletin ref. so vw know about it and my dealer did but as I said in my first post it's rather expensive.

Hi Homeform, apologies - I was going to reply to you. Is it definitely the tailgate that is causing the issue? Just over a year ago I had an annoying creak/squeaking noise coming from the rear nearside of the car. I fiddled around with the tailgate to no avail and eventually thought it could be something to do with the suspension.

I took it into the dealer and it wasn't the suspension, but rather a failed spot weld! They fixed it for me using Waxoyl, cost me £200 but I was pleased to get rid of the noise. As you say, on good surface roads it was fine. What year is your car?
