Basically had a nightmare. I live on a slight decline and park my car the other night, put handbrake on and got out car wasn't rolling at all. Then I got inside had a sit down put on tv, bla bla bla... Five minutes later I hear my car alarm going off so I run outside and see my car heading down the hill! Before I could catch it it heat the rear of another car so it was bum to bum. Luckily their car was a big old volvo so only slight cracked bumper and smashed rear light but mine has a massive dent!! Just wondered what that bit behind the rear bumper is called? Like the metal bar thing? Many thanks

Catalytic Converter heat shield ? If so, ouch. I guess you may have to look at possible damage to the cat.

I would like to say it's one of the advantages of having a DSG - you can only take out the key when its in Park, which effectively doubles as the handbrake. Mind you, this being my first 'automatic' (or, for the purists, an equivalent), I soon learnt that it's not wholly advisable to leave the car running in 'D' by using the brake pedal to 'step off' as you get out: you tend to have to foolish scrabble after a moving car, with the alloys moving dangerously close to the kerb...

Hope one of the resident experts here can help heal your pain soon.

The catalytic convertor is at the front of the car just behind the engine where the downpipe joins the main exhaust. I think you are referring to the rear silencer.

Behind the rear of the car there is replaceable crash bar that absorbs the impact.

Bit late now but I always leave my car in gear just incase the handbrake cable snaps or the discs cool and contract and as a consequence reduce tje pressure of the pad.

so is that piece of metal called the replaceable crash bar then? I think its the bit of metal with the bumper brackets mounted on to it if you know what i mean?

The crash bar is not visible and sits behind tje bumper. Nest thing to do is to find someone with ETKA or ELSAWIN and have a look at the exploded drawing of the rear of the car to.identify the actual part you are talking about.
