Scirocco Central

Hello everyone. What do you guys think? Should I get rid of my Scirocco (160PS) or not?

It's 2011, it has 37000 miles on the clock. DSG was overhauled 2 weeks ago and now timing chain started to rattle few days ago and engine does not run smoothly when standing in lights. It had quick session with VW-mechanics today and the verdict is that timing chain and tightener needs to be replaced and the cam head needs to be machined, so I guess we are also talking about damaged valves and stuff.

My car will run out of warranty next fall and I am a bit worried if I should keep it. Without the warranty, paying 3000EUR for DSG overhaul and over 5000EUR for next cam head repair doesn't sound like something I would want.

Well get it all done on warranty before it runs out... Then everything will be good as new. Or get at extended warranty, they aren't expensive for peace of mind.

Yes it will be fixed under warranty. But I might be facing another 7500EUR overhaul in the next 37k miles and that would be without warranty. As far as I know (and the forums?) they will not use any improved parts to fix my Scirocco, they just change the faulty stuff with the same parts?

Those kind of expenses are extremely rare from what I can see. If it's all done under warranty you'll be good to carry on.

There is a poll on Finnish VAG-forum about the DSG-faults, currently 31% users report that their DSG has failed (need of repair and spare parts). And out of those 78% say it was before 60k miles. The 2.0 TSI uses different type of DSG. The one used in 1.2-1.4 TSI is only rated to handle 250Nm (184 lb·ft) of force.

There are also a lot of 1.2-1.4 TSI timing chain fails on the forums. The current thread about the matter is 122 pages long. There is no poll yet about the matter, but it looks alarming.

If 31% of those DSG boxes were failing we'd all know about it, publicly.VW would have a PR disaster on their hands. They don't seem to.

What you may be finding is that 31% of the people who've complained on a forum have a problem. That doesn't account for the tens of thousands of others who don't have a problem at all.

There is a disaster brewing. The Finnish VAG-users are really baffled why VW has not said anything about it. You gotta remember that it's 31% out of those who have voted on the forums. Of course its not 31% of total VW users.
I personally know 5 DSG7-users (including me) and 4 of those has had their DSG fail before 60k miles. All with 1.4 TSI DSG7.

Do you not think the motoring press would be all over it if it was that bad?

I am seriously surprised that no-one has heard of this before. It is really big problem here in North. Maybe climate has something to do with it?

Most of those articles are 2 years old. There's been a recall since then.

Nods. My car is 2 years old was never recalled nor was there a recall for it. Were other countries cars recalled?
This might be the main concern about the Finnish 2009-2012 1.4 TSI DSG's. They weren't recalled. Which is really weird.

Received a recall letter from VAG today, for the 7 speed DSG. This is the 'open clutch/freewheel' issue experienced in hot climates, and for which the remedy is replacement of the synthetic oil with mineral oil. The offer is of a free precautionary check, and oil changed to mineral oil if necessary. Strongly recommends that the recall offer is taken up.
