Looking to buy my first Scirocco - Help?

Hello all,
I'm looking at getting my first scirocco very soon. It will be 2nd hand, looking at buying one just shy of 80K miles, not too bothered on colour.
I have driven both the 140GT and 170GT and found the 170 engine to be quieter, only just quicker at the top end acceleration too but not been able to take one above 60mph yet
My questions are:
# When are the cam belts due a change? In the service manual you get with the car it says at 130,000 miles but the internet says otherwise
# What differences should I see between a 140 and 170 apart from 170's are harder to find?
# Are there any faults / problems to prepare myself for and look out for when purchasing / testing future sciroccos?
Thanks for reading, waiting patiently (not really i want a scirocco now!) for your reply

Cambelt is 4 years for cars registered prior to Seo 2009 and 5 years after Sep 2009.
Mileage is 130k but is irrelevant to the majority as the time will dictate the schedule.

Thanks, I have been looking at 2010 models, so basically next year it is due even if its nowhere near the 130,000 mark?
Thanks for the reply.

Yes that's correct.
There doesn't seem to be any inherent issues with the diesel.Sciroccos so nothing in particular to look out for. Abnormal tyre wear on the rear tyres is common causing droning / rumbling.
Towards the end of 2010 the 140 got BMT which is basically start/stop and a bit of energy recovery on breaking. 170 has none of it, thankfully:-)
Apart from being slightly.more expensive to run the 170 is better than the 140 and is a really good compromise between performance and economy. Everyone with a 140 will tell you tnere is not much difference but I've never heard a 170 owner.saying they wish they had bought a 140 instead.

Thanks, excellent information. Why do Sciroccos develop such odd rear tyre wear?
I do far less driving than I used to do so fuel costs are not a concern no more but where I am there are next to no 170's around within reasonable travelling distance.
Thinking a 1 owner (was actually a company car at VW garage), full service history silver 2l TDI 140BHP may be the one to go for
Will await comments from other forum members though. Any ideas though why the 170 was noticeable quieter? Admittedly I was on smoother roads and the 170 was 25,000 miles newer...
Thanks again.

I've owned a 140TDI and 177TDI and changed my original view. I would definitely go with the 177, its got much more power and a far more pleasant driving experience. The 177 is new so I only have limited experience so far on the noise front, but its a lot quieter than the 140, I was still on the original rear tyres on the 140 so Cuprabob is probably right.

The abnormal rear tyre wear is not particular to Sciroccos, it's a trait of most VAG cars with the same platform. Sime types of tyres are worse than others for it based on the tread pattern.
With regards to noise, the 170 has the synthesised sound generation which makes it sound "sporty" from within the cabin.

@Char, 177?
Im comparing the 140 to 170.
Thanks Cupra, didn't know about that sound magic, will look into that. Do you have anything in writing from VW or a reliable source to backup the "2010+ models don't need new belts until 5 years old"??
Thanks. I would love the 170 but it's cost and its a £3 to £4k difference in my area so far from looking.

Are you joking about this? I just googled it but can't find a thing...

Not at all, I'm 100% serious. It's fitted to many modern cars.

Ok, one last question. A basic remap of a 140bhp Scirocco, what would the end results be roughly with no other modifications made to the car? Just a retune.
Also the 170 version, does it use different injectors, larger intake or turbo? Or is it just remapped?

A remap on a 140 takes it to about 170 and a remap on the 170 takes it to around 210. 170 has a different turbo, injectors and bigger brakes

Actually sounds good. Makes a diesel car sound sporty on the inside.

Thanks guys, need to take the 140 for a serious test drive, hope to get that done mid this week.
So there are no handling differences between the 140 and 170 apart from brakes?
The only real sound difference I felt in the 170 I took out was the turbo sounded louder :/
Thanks for the help so far too, much appreciated.

Hi Badas, Yep Scirocco GTS 2.0 TDI 177PS 6spd - I doubt there is much difference between 170 and 177, so if you can stretch to a 170 definitely worth it.
Sound thing, I think its called soundaktor, it just makes you accelerator hard all the time and blows your MPG
