Got leak from somewhere under inlet manifold on 09 2 litre tsi. Mechanic says seal where water pump joins cylinder and it is a known VW problem. £50 materials which is just seal and thermostat while engine stripped to get to it and £150 labour to fix but one of the parts (plastic thermostat housing) is in Germany and will take a week to get here.
Anybody had same problem?

When they got it stripped it turned out to be a crack in the water pump housing which is strangely made of plastic. Bloke said with constant hot and cold going through the water pump he is not surprised it ended up with a failure but it is another one of those things that you just have to get fixed and get on with it. Cost me the best part of £200, mostly for the time needed to strip everything out to get to the water pump. Hope this one lasts longer than the last one!

Water pump leaks are a known problem but not heard of the housing failing before.

See pictures of failed housing, see on the close up where the gasket is misshaped and the bit of plastic missing from behind it where it has failed caused the water leak.

My water pump failed as well. I couldn't find in local dealers here in Egypt. I'm traveling to Paris next Friday 9th of January. Was thinking of buying it online and shipping it to my hotel. Does any of you guys know a place

Mine is the 1.4 tsi twin charged. So the water pump is the one with the clutch with the super charger
