RNS510 - DAB and Microphone question

Hey all,
I have recently fitted an RNS510 (LED Screen version) to my scirocco, it has the DAB functionality amongst other stuff.... But how do I get this working? There is a connector on the back of the unit (which I assume is for a DAB cable)... where does the DAB cable go to? Where do I get one from?
My Scirocco has the dummy aerial on the roof and I believe it isn't necessary to have the DAB roof aerial though, I've read in some places that it connects to an amplifier?
Any help would be much appreciated!
On a side note.... to make use of the voice controls etc.... I assume I need a microphone of some sort? Where do I get this from and where is best to install?
Any guides for the above questions would be brilliant.

I will answer some of your questions and also pose some of mine (if you don't mind).
There is a radio signal amplifier (I think that's what it's called), installed underneath on of the rear windows, not sure of the exact location i.e. driver or passenger side), but there is a thread where RW1 (RIP) states the location. You can uninstall it and replace it with a DAB amplifier that will work just find with the antennae in your rear window. Do a search using the keywords "DAB amplifier" and see what you find on the forum.
For voice controls, yes, you do need a mic. If you have OEM bluetooth installed in the car, the mic should already be in place and all you need to do is wire it correctly to the RNS510. If you dont have a bluetooth system installed, you might have to source the mic seperately and connect up.
This brings us to the question of where best to install: The OEM mic goes into the map light console in the roof - I'd say that is the best and neatest place to put it in.
Now my question: You say you got an RNS510 with DAB capability?! Where did you buy this from? How much did it cost? What version is it? (part number will be ok to determine this), and how do you know it has DAB?
Thanks

Hello there,
I purchased it from an eBay shop, complete with keycard etc etc.
It cost me about £800.
After looking at a picture I took of the rear of the unit on my phone I've spotted that the part number is: 1T0 035 686 C
It has DAB because it has been searching for the DAB stations but been failing (obviously).
I did purchase a DAB amplifier actually as I thought it may come in handy, that was about £30 (genuine VW one). So I won't need to connect into the spare socket on the rear of the unit.... just swap the FM amplifier for a DAB one instead?
Doesn't sound too bad if that is the case. I will try and find how to take apart the rear trim soon then.
With regards to the microphone stuff... I don't have the bluetooth kit, perhaps I'll wait a while on this one, doing soo much at once I am bound to mess something up.

I assume if you swap out the current amplifier, then you should be able to pick up DAB stations, but that might need verification.
£800 is very steep! I have heard that some Version C units DO have DAB capability; might have to do a bit more searching.
OEM bluetooth kit with looms and mic will set you back about £150

I'd been looking around for one for ages and would rarely see them below £900 for the LED, Sat Nav, DVD Player, 40GB HDD and DAB functionality. So when this one was there and I could submit a "best offer" I did.
Very easy to install - as you'd expect, but just now need to activate all the functionality, so will use VCDS to alter some settings.

It was £700, my mistake.

Ok.... I'm stuck now....
I removed the rear driver side 1/4 panel to find the existing amplifier (Which I was hoping I could just swap out with the DAB one I have)... but... the connectors are different.. the one in place at the moment has just one connector each side, the DAB amplifier has two connections on one side (a double socket) and a single going to the aerial.
This is the rear of the RNS510 I have - note that there is nothing connected to what I presume is the DAB socket.

This is the amplifier in place at the moment.

This is the DAB amplifier I was hoping to fit in it's place.

So.... my question is.... what the hell do I need to get this RNS510 DAB working?

I'm sorry i cant be certain , as i've never done the DAB retro-fit - but i saw your question and i do know that Kufatec do a lot of useful kits for retrofits on our cars

Yeah that was the page I found previously.
I'm not sure...
What would I do with the existing cable with goes into the existing amp?
The amp in the picture maybe the same as the one I was going to fit at the weekend - hard to say, but either way... I'd still have a cable left over - which is confusing me.

I think salsajoe did this retrofit.
I would say swap out the amps, and route your new cable (2 connector side), via the trim panels close to the floor and pass it to the RNS via the hole in the fusebox

Ah I see. the kufatec link UKLee posted is of the amp + cables; I assume you have to get the cable somehow and then it's good to go. See if there are any on ebay

I've ordered that amp and cable now.
Will give it a go when it arrives.
Did it take the guy long to fit? I'm ok with removing the rear panel now.... it's just the routing of the cable I am not sure about.
Also.... what do I do with the existing cable that is routed there (from another connector on the rear of the RNS unit)?

I think the other one is still an FM LEAD. MIne has two leads in the back. One DAB one FM. He went straight down the door sill trims I belie e

I thought the cable from the back of the RNS unit (DAB connection) was a double socket when it connects to the amp?
But looking at the picture here:
http://www.kufatec.co.uk/shop/en/DAB-/- ... nna-module" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It looks like it is one cable with a double socket, perhaps the FM connector connects to the rear of the connector and then into the amplifier?

I might be wrong, but from what I can see:
Original non DAB amp: Cable has one "single" socket that connects to the amp, and the other end is a double socket that connects to the back of the RCD/RNS for FM AM
Replacement DAB amp: Cable has a "double" socket that connects to the amp, and then the other end is a SINGLE socket that goes to the DAB connector at the back of the RNS/RCD.
Now, I presume if you connect that up, it will serve as a DAB, FM and AM amp altogether

That's what I'm hoping!
I'll leave the other cable (FM/AM one) in place then but just disconnect it from the amp I will be swapping.

Got this all fully working today. Routed the DAB cable from the rear of the RNS510 out through the fuse panel, down and in the plastic trim under the door and to the DAB amplifier. Left the FM/AM cable in place and everything worked as soon as I'd scanned for stations.

Fantastic!!! Good work and glad it's all worked fine.
Not sure I will be going for the DAB module, far too expensive when I can stream via my phone
