New member - Buying Advice

Morning Guys,

Recently found the forum whilst searching for a replacement for my current car (E87 120i M Sport '06). I like to think I'm a thorough and well informed buyer so have been searching in depth over the past 2 months looking at Roc's with the current spec/mileage for a certain price:

TDI GT DSG
'10 Plate or Newer
Less than 40,000 Miles
Leather
Bluetooth
Heated Front Seats

Preference towards buying from a main dealer as I cover a lot of miles a year (circa 25,000) and so try to include at least a years servicing in the deal. Not to ask too much but I need all of the above for £15,000 or less. VW Portsmouth have currently offered me £4500 for p/x against this 'Roc http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/used/search ... eight@1711 the spec I'd like but with no bluetooth. They have given me the usual offer of £300 retrofit.

My opening offer will be along the lines of:

£4900 for p/x (WBAC offered £4850, BMW offered £4900)
£14,200 for the Roc
£300 for Bluetooth; as long as it includes fitting.

Was looking for some thoughts on this proposal and people have dealt with VW dealers.

Great forum so far.

Thanks

Tom

I'd say thats a pretty good deal, they are offering you about the trade price for yours, and doing a deal on the price of the Roc. It will come with a years warranty too, and with a main dealer its one worth having..

Bluetooth is an easy retrofit, so not to bad that its not standard spec either. Depends what unit they are fitting, Fiscon is a good choice as it integrates through your standard H/U, and come up on the big screen etc, opposed to having another small unit on the dash.

I'd try get them to half the price of the B/T kit, and call it a deal.

Appreciate that it's a franchise, but they're not giving much away on the screen price? I'd be aiming to achieve at least 14.2K, not making it my opening offer.

The px and 14.5K with the Bluetooth fit should seem more than fair from their perspective (similar to what AarronMc has said), since I'm guessing that car didn't cost them more than 12.5K. From the price drops I've observed on rocs around 15k on the last 2 months, dealers have room to drop the price for a couple of grand for slow moving cars. (Appreciate that this ones new to the mkt, since there's no image yet and, also, I can't find it at a higher price on a cached search).*

Fortune favours the brave, Rodney!

*When I bought my roc it was advertised at x. I did an initial cache search and found it had been on the forecourt for 6 weeks, selling at 0.5K more. A further cache search showed that they'd had it for 10 weeks, priced originally at 1.5K more. I paid around 650 less than the lowest of the reduced prices and had them put 6 mths tax on it and two new contis on the front.

Thanks both for your input. Must admit I've never heard of running a 'cached' search, can you shed some more light on this?

I am seeing a number of Roc's this weekend and instead of having on going negotiations with a number of dealers I like to offer a price I am happy to pay and give the dealer a 'take it or leave it' option; knowing that I've got a another 'Roc round the corner. With group stock updated daily my only time restriction is replace my current car by month end. It might be the case of one none of the dealers agreeing to my price until they're short on target come the last Friday of the month.

Sounds like good strategy.

Regarding cached search, I simply mean that on Google you can input the car's identifying details in Google (could be the unique way the dealer has tiled the ad such 'Great Spec', or miles and age or even number plate) and doing a cache google search (by clicking on the little green arrow displayed alongside a search result). I got back several results of varying ages from various advertising locations (autocar, motors uk, aa etc) and printed them out for the back pocket, if required.

AA's an interesting site since it shows you whether there's any finance outstanding against the car; in this case it was on 4mth VW stock financing. When I first enquired (phoned) about the car, asking how long they'd had it, I received the 'I think it's just come out onto the forecourt' line. During negotiations I causally mentioned that the financing deal would be up in the not too distance future and could I be assured the car would be hpi clear. The dealer then knew that I knew how long he'd had it.

As I say, I suspect the dealer hasn't long had the car you mention since it's awaiting images (and I wasn't successful in a cached search on it, either).

Thanks Moulin for searching and giving me another piece of knowledge that I hadn't previously used when car searching.

As I said I'm taking out 4 Roc's this weekend and will work out what I'm willing to pay to each before submitting my offer.

A quick update on where I'm at. Test drove 3 Roc's this weekend and found the 140 PS slightly under powered when overtaking. Which means I've narrowed it down to two Roc's, one previously mentioned, with pictures now up loaded to the VW site.

For anyone interested http://www.petercoopergroup.co.uk/used- ... CarID=3299

Will be talking to the dealer tomorrow to submit my offer. Any advice on the offer see earlier post.
