Cracked high level brake light

Anyone else had this?

I noticed mine was cracked a month or so before my MOT in March. So I had them replace it at the same time at a slightly eye watering £130 as the boot lid has to be dismantled. Why on earth it couldn't just be a lens and 2 screws on the outside I don't know.

Tonight I put my shopping in the boot and noticed that it's cracked again!

This doesn't seem right  so I'm wondering if it's a common occurrence. I'm not about to pay out for a replacement for something that's only lasted 3 months.

Not had a problem myself. I had a good look at mine when you mentioned it the first time. Our cars are similar age.
Surely should be under guarantee if the dealer fitted it though.Might be worth a moan to the dealer

Mine has been ok Kev, mine (as you know) is also of a similar age to yours. It does seem crazy that it has cracked again within 3 months. I assume the boot shuts normally and does not take any extra effort to close it down? The hatch itself is a fair weight in itself, but I would not expect vibration/shock to crack the lens.

I would not be happy at having to pay out another £130, perhaps it was not fitted quite correctly, they will deny it of course. Strange one. :(

Just changed mine! Pretty simple actually. Took me the best part of an hour to complete! Will post a howto in my original thread! :)

Could be worse, on my R32 the spoiler also had to be removed to remove the high level light and that spoiler is bonded on. Thankfully there is a way it can be replaced by breaking the old one out and without the need to remove the spoiler.

A lot of these LED lights have failed on Golfs at around 3 yrs.

Mine is slightly cracked as well. I`m sure I was told way back that it was due to closing the boot.
VW parts are guaranteed for 2 years I`m sure so it should be covered with the dealers.

I'm in and out of the boot several times a day. Think I'd better check mine too.
But how can closing the hatch crack the light fitting? Unless you are in the habit of really slamming it shut ..... errmm like my missus does

Nah, Wrexham.

I don't SLAM the boot. I shut it normally like anyone else would. I go over a lot of speed bumps to get to and from work but I can't see that as being a great issue either really. That's just normal driving.

It's a real pain cos now I've got to mess up one of my days off in July to get it sorted out.

A Bit worried now - I will check mine later, as some people do have the habit of absolutely smashing down the boot when closing on mine. Why - I don't know. But it's irritating and they usually get a telling off.

My MOT was last week and it wasn't pointed out. I'm hoping that's because the defect doesnt exist

True Andy, but I'm hopefully going to have time to take my folks for a little trip out to the mountains, although I can't really give it the beans with them in the back :)

I'll keep an eye on the light on my car. no cracks, but noticed when washing, it's always felt a little loose, since new.

Yep. No charge but they suggested that was just a one off for good will and said they'd never seen one before, let alone two.

I had a look at mine... The Driver side rear light does have something that looks like a crack runnin across; then again, it might just be a scratch. I also looked at the clearance between the boot edges and the top of the light, there is about a 2mm clearance there - hmmmm. I'll leave it for now (might update post with pictures)
