I've got a couple that are specific to me and can move from car to car. Not really a fan of car specific plates.

Do you have to wait for the V5 to come back before buying a private plate?

No you just buy the plate and you get sent a certificate of entitlement.

You'll have to wait until the V5 arrives to assign it to the car.

Hi buddy,

Good to meet at garage the other day with near identical Rocs. Cool number plate, keep an eye open for that. Now that R Gearshift you are seeking! Had a look for you. I got mine from an ebay shop called 'Tuning Fanatics Shop' (Germany) but he does'nt appear to have any at the mo. However, there is a guy in Portugal selling them on ebay, he's got good feedback. £110 +£15 pp. Item description 'VW GOLF 6 SCIROCCO GEAR KNOB GTD GTI R'. His seller ID is 'almascs'. Iam guessing VW dealers would charge more. I'am glad I changed mine, finishes off the interior nice!! Good luck with the search. Hopefully see you around 'Candy White with Pan Roof Club' lol. Now I know why my PM wont send!!

I think it makes more sense being on the car than on its own:

cost me £250.0 including the £80 retention fee to update the V5, buzzin really.

Looks good :)

£80 is actually transfer fee to put it on the car. Retention fee is what you pay when you take the plate off the car, currently £105 for 1 year, which also includes the £80 transfer fee for when it's put on the next car.

Just make sure the tax disc and the plates always match up.

They sort all that for you at the DVLA office, MoT Certificate and Tax Disc. Insurance didnt charge me for the change either which was good. I would only move it to another car if the new Scirocco (2015) tickles my fancy, im pretty sure its value of £250.00 would be added to the car if/when i sell it.
