Idle...

Time for another one of my paranoia inspired questions...
I've noticed that my car seems to purr/pulse slightly at idle. It mainly happens just as the revs return to idle...e.g. when coming to standstill at a set of traffic lights.
I can only describe it as a wavey purr..... like brrrrr brrrr brrrrr brrrr, each brrr lasting about a second... rather than a constant brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
The sound isn't tappety, more of an gentle deeper note... maybe even the exhaust .
Just want to ask.... do your cars go straight to brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr when returning to idle??? Or do you also get a brrr brrr brrrr for a few seconds??
