What's Involved

Ok, sat bored at work and looking through the small adds when I came across a Golf R that's in the breakers for a front end and roof damage.

Now, this set my easily distracted mind a wandering.....just how much work would it be and what's involved in fitting the 4WD running gear into a Scirocco. Both floor pans are the same, the suspension components are the same, the engine is the same SO, is it just a case of running gear, ECU and then moving the fuel tank and exhaust or is it an impossible conversion that will take thousands and thousands of pounds and man hours to complete?

My googling revealed an American company that will sell you a 4WD 3.2 V6 turbo Scirocco for $100K :eyepop:

Just a quick question!
Is really the suspension completely the same? I found 2 different article numbers when looking on a H&R Coilovers.

Sorry for OT!

The golf r has a different boot floor to a standard none awd golf... So you'd need to fabricate a new boot floor as a minimium. IRRC the scirocco floor /transmission tunnel can't accommodate the centre dif either.

This guy in sciroccoclub.gr fitted golf r32 engine and 4wd transmission to a scirocco 1.4 tsi... It involved a lot of work as I see, and he is a car tech himself. If I remember correctly, he had to make heavy mods to the boot, in order to fit the 4wd system...

It's the engine from Passat R36 not R32, along with conversion from manual to DSG-6 transmission from the R36 Passat.

A guy at work has a Golf R, I'm going to park them up next to each other and do some examination, I'll take pictures if anyone is interested.
If its a case of a boot floor then that's not a big problem, it can be removed from the donor car and made to fit but I didn't really want to get into chopping of a 4 month old car, if it was a direct fit with minimum fuss then it was a done deal.
I'll report back with my findings and photos.

The rear suspension of Scirocco features the back axle from a Passat giving the wider track than a Golf.

4Motion Passat’s exist so you might be better off with the back half of a Passat 4Motion rather than a Golf R for 4WD hardware, at least at the back.

I'm sure with a bit of home-grown VAG style platform and component sharing you could cobble together a FrankinRoc. I suspect how much effort and money it would cost would not be apparent until you had it finished.

after all, its the exclusive mods that make each car special...

There's quite a few of the Passat R36's on the road here, it would only be the drive shafts required from that model though if the wheel base is wider than the golf. Drive shafts I can buy from the main dealer without an issue.
