Grinding on start up

Evening all,

Has anyone experienced a significant grinding on start up of their R? I've recently been getting a pretty audible grinding once the engine has caught for a couple of seconds.

The grinding isn't repeatable and doesn't seem aligned to either a cold or hot start, it does however seem to be getting more common with time. I'll record pretty much every start and post with it develops again.

Could it be the starter not disengaging as it should from the flywheel?

Was thinking that too.

Is it a low or a high pitched grind?

Quite high pitched. If it isn't correctly disengaging, is it likely to flag up a fault code?

No.

If it is squeaky in nature, on the 6spd DSG, doesn't affect the manual gearbox. The starter pinion catches the starter motor ring on the flywheel. Starter Motor out and apply spray grease G 000 900 A2 (400ml can) to the starter's pinion drive and the starter ring round the whole circumference. Allow grease to dry for 15 minutes before re-assembly.

It is a warranty claim.

Have you ever tried to start a car that's already running? Does it sound like that type of metal on metal noise?

Thanks C, from that I've been reading, it seems as though one of the dsg mk5 boys had a similar issue which was solved by greasing the starter.

Bob, that's very much what it sounds like.

I take it that if it's simply a issue of regressing the starter, there won't be any issue of FOD swimming around In the bell housing?

Not ordinary axle grease!

Sorry I mean from the stater/flywheel if it's grinding.

Booked in with the Stealers on Thursday along with a huge list of other work.

Cheers for the help guys!

Ah!. Not really and it would mean taking the gearbox off to check. They won't do that unless something is spotted while the starter motor is out or the flywheel/starter ring is turned 360ยบ to lubricate. What would be there cannot cause further damage. Not talking big chucks of metal tooth etc., more like fine filings.
