Lock to lock grinding

Evening all,

Tonight my vehicles started making some really strange sounds when going from lock to lock driving (both forwards and reverse). Would anyone be able to have a view at the following video and suggest what it could be? steering rack?

Hello Snapey,

Difficult to hear what is happening as you turn the wheel. The sound only comes as you are moving in which case I would say a driveshaft or a wheel bearing. Have you kissed the kerb recently?

You can faintly hear it stop when the vehicle comes to a halt the second time. It also appears that the sound is constant when moving (all be it more faintly due to road noise) I'll upload a second video in a minute.

I've not clipped a kerb yet. I'm hoping it's something along the lines of a wheel bearing, CV joint etc as appose to the rack.

Yes - difficult to tell from the Video, cant really hear anything (other than the engine). It wont be the rack, pretty sure about that, likely to be a CV joint, unusual as the car is new, may need a bit of greasing or some kind of adjustment.

I have just been out in my roc and thought I would go a quick check. I too can hear a grinding noise when turning in both directions on full lock. But only when on full lock. If I take about 10 degrees off the wheels the noise goes away and there is nothing when driving normally. I can't really say I had noticed this before, but I was listening for it this time so it may well have always done so.

Maybe this is normal for the roc? Could it be the tires on the ground?

Thanks for the info guys.

Vehicles booked in with VW on the 5th due to the new year. Hopefully it'll turn out to be something simple.

I had to pop into the dealers today to pick up some bits and pieces, so while I was there I mentioned the issue I was having. One of their technicans came for a ride in the car with me. He said the problem was the cv boots rubbing and that this was not anything to worry about. Funnily enough as I was demonstrating the problem, it stopped doing it. He did tell me that if the problem got worse, to bring the car in and they would jack it up and do some checks.

As I returned home several hours later this afternoon, it started doing it again. This time it was raining pretty heavily, as it was yesterday when I found the issue. Maybe the rain is a contributing factor? However, I had turned off the radio and climatronic so that I could listen for it. It may well be that my car has been doing it all the time, and that I just hadn't noticed.

I would be interested to hear the outcome of your car snapey.

Cheers for the info Jimma. I think what I'll do tomorrow then is grease up both CV boots and see if it helps/removes the rubbing.

Mine also does this.

I had it last year during the Winter months and it has returned again this year during the Winter months.

When I took it to the dealer last year to have a look at it, the noise disappeared and they never heard it, so nothing was diagnosed.

Your dealer is refering to a bulletin but the YouTube above doesn't exactly match the VW description. The bulletin covers all Sciroccos.

In the "youTube" above its like a ticking noise to me. VW refer to the cv boots making a squeaking/creaking noise. Which to me is different??
But it does refer to wet weather/conditions being a contributing factor.

Bottom line for this bulletin......
"No rectification required."
Explain to the customer...... "it is normal."
Replacement parts will not be re-imbursed to the dealership.
No production change is planned.

Evening all,

This afternoon I gave the CV boots a small coating of ACC SMG494 (silicone grease) and after putting the car through its paces both at high and low speed manoeuvres, it appears to completely have eradicated the noise. I'll keep listening out over the next couple of days but it seems to have done the trick.
