timing chain tensioner query
Hi all, looking at getting a 2008 TSI Scirocco with around 80-90k miles and am wondering if its worth getting the timing chain done when I buy it for peace of mind. Does anyone know how much it would cost on average to get it upgraded to the newer design chain and whether its worth it at all, thanks.

Re: timing chain tensioner query
I had the timing chain plus pulleys and tensioner done for £900 , if you can find a competent guy with adequate knowledge he should do the job in a day .

Get it changed, for peace of mind. Don't not.
I see some places write lifetime, 100k mile, 150k miles. But if it hadn't been changed since new, it is coming up on 16years old.
It should not cost 900 pounds effing sterling, unless it includes and SF90 loaner car. Timing belt kit comes in around 20 bob.

Collector of warning lights.

Re: timing chain tensioner query
Old thread but hers my opinion.
In theory, the reason manufacturers fitted chains were to last the life of the engine.
This said I do remember reading somewhere that the lower pulley / tensioner is a weaker point but they don’t have the timing chain poor reputation of some other manufacturers.
If it’s a belt driven then if it hasn’t been done… YES!! Get it done. Definitely not a £900 job though.
As long as it has been regularly serviced in theory it should be okay but with chains you can usually hear the signs of things starting to wear.
In my opinion I would leave it alone, if it’s rattling when you look at it either leave the car well alone, there’s plenty out there but if you are at the point where it is starting to make noises, a stitch in time and all that most definitely saves!
