Do remaps really improve the MPG

Post by Babajang »

So you hear people say that remaping improves the mpg if driving carefully... is this just bs and the trip computer is just tricked by the map thinking the car is using less fuel or something? or does it genuinely improve economy?

I don't really know but as I've seen on the forums before with chips is :'even if the chip doesn't work the person in question will always try to talk it good instead of admitting it was a scam and looking like a fool'

Honestly I don't know I believe they should offer something like 'not satisfied money back'?

I'll be testing this myth out once I figure out which tuning box I'll be fitting so watch this space for updates soon....

Sweet, ive had maps on my 2.0 tsi gt and a1 diesel in the past but stupidly didn't make a log of the real mpg :( The extra power of a map is really addictive and the cars have felt so slow once ive taken them off... if the mpg myth is true then its win win.

Unless 'tuning boxes' have came on a LOT in the last 5 years I wouldn't expect anything advanced enough to realistically improve MPG.

An actual remap could well improve MPG at non WOT. A tuning box generally just fools your engine into running more boost and lobbing in more fuel, regardless of what the advertising waffle claims

Stage 1 map on my last car (Ibiza tdi) did improve my fuel economy from around 42.5 to around 47.5mpg, based over several 1000 miles and not using the trip computer

You absolutely get an improvement when you have your ECU remapped properly when not driving fast.

Obviously if you are driving more quickly etc then you will not get the economy improvement.
