Screw

Post by Deniz94 »

So had a warning light come up today checked the tyres the pressure was okay but in the rear driver side there was a screw inside the tyre it looks like if i try to take it out all the pressure will all go.

What should i do? Do i just replace the tyre?

Whats the best tyres to get?

It really depends in where the puncture is. If it's in the tread part then it will be easily fixable, my local place charges £6 to fix a puncture. If it's in the sidewall then it's new tyre time. I wouldn't be buying a new tyre if I didn't need time.

You could probably drive it to your local tyre place OK as is but if you don't feel comfortable doing that put the spare on and take the punctured tyre down and get it fixed.

As said if it's within the central 3/4 of the tread it's a possible repair. After that it's outside of most tyre repair shops, but it depends how much life there is on the tyre (tread depth) against how much a new tyre is. If the tyre's fairly new and expensive then you can get a major repair done at specialist tyre places which will be as good as new, cost about £40 or so last time I had one done. But if the tyre's getting down and not worth repairing then a new pair would be my choice.

If you are only buying one then it should really be the same as on the other axle. Buying two there is a fair amount of debate on the best buy - premium tyres you are looking at Michelin Pilot sport 3; Continental conti 5; Goodyear F1 assymetric 2. Others on the forum probably have different favourites. For prices go to the black circles website as a starter and try to get lower prices than these. You can get them fitted locally at an all in price. Good luck.

The in vogue tyre at the moment is the Michelin Pilot Super Sport.

Tyre performance is so subjective and down to personal preference that recommendations are almost meaningless.

I like the Pirelli P Zeros that were fitted to my Scirocco at the factory.

I'm a big fan of Vredstein and currently have their Ultrac Vortis on my Scirocco. Ive only ever used quality brand tyres and girls my these perform up there with the likes of Goodyear Eagles or Bridgestone Potenzas but are a fraction of the price. I use Tyres pneus online for tyres.

That's easily repairable in my opinion, they'll use a plug to fix it.

Totally fixable. Infact I used to fix punctures like that on a near daily basis at my mates garage when he was busy.

That puncture is easily safely repairable with the screw in that position. They will remove the tyre from the wheel, take out the screw, plug the hole with a rubber bung, vulcanise a patch on the inside of the tyre refit and rebalance the wheel. Should only cost small change as stated earlier. I think I paid £15.00 for the last one.

You won't get points for having a screw in your tyre, but you might need to thank them for pointing it out to you if they do stop you and see it. "Thank you officer. I didn't know. you've probably just saved me a load of grief and I'll get it repaired today!" Police like to be made to feel important.

However, best get it repaired as soon as to save any issues like running flat which will bugger the tyre.

We had one last year on our Polo, only noticed it when parked up but had probably been like it for a while as I did have to put more air in that tyre than the others on my checks. Was fixed for £10 at a good repairers!
