Basically after I parked up tonight, I turned off the engine and what sounded like a fan kicked in for around 2 mins. I had only driven the car prob half a mile but when I got in the car at the start of my journey I made a phone call and sat in the car for about 10-12 mins with the engine on.
Any ideas guys. Hopefully it's something simple or just me being simple!

Its generally a bad idea to idle a cold engine for any length of time - certainly not ten minutes plus - its also expensive and not great for the environment either... just sayin (as they say)...

Why is that? I tend to leave mine to warm up for 5/10 mins in the morning while it defrosts/etc.
For a start you are running the engine at lower oil temperature than its normal operating temperature for much monger than if it was driven straight away. Colder oil is not as good at its job (lubricating the engine) than oil at the normal design operating temps.
I run my car for about a minute till the revs drop, then I move off... Been doing that for a number of years now. Was told by a mechanic that it was good for the engine - not sure if that's a myth
I can understand that the oil works better when at it's operating temperature and driving helps speed up that increase in temperature. But you should still wait at least 20 seconds just to let the oil begin to circulate round the engine, other wise you increase the rate of wear on startup
