Amazing photos guys!

I've currently got the Panasonic LX3 high end compact. though i am thinking of getting a DSLR for the very firs time.

Im a novice and hence need something easy for a beginner to use, and to begin with will probably only be using the kit lens.

Has anybody got any advise on buying a DSLR?

I'm thinking the Canon 550D/600D or the Nikon D4100?

What do you guys think?

the canon 550 is brilliant! if it had been out abit longer when i bought my sony i probably would have got it instead.
it is definitely worthwhile going in & having a hold of a selection though (i'm lucky i have WEX near me who have a great selection on the floor to try) they are all so similar yet also so different & if you can have a flick through the menu system too

Cheers trix. 550D had be superseded by the 600D, though the only difference is a flip out screen. Any experience of the Nikon? I held both the Nikon and Canons, the Canons felt much more comfortable to hold due to the larger grip.

Will the kit lens 18-55mm be ok for most scenarios?

I've got a 550D.

The 18-55mm is fine for general stuff. It's also not bad at a decent level of macro.
The 600D had only just come out when I got mine. The flip out screen and a couple of deeper options I'd never use wasn't really enough to get me to spend the extra.
Except for the last post on page 1, all of my pics on there are with the 18-55. I'm very much an amateur so you can see it flatters the skill level!

I think you've convinced me with those photos. Amazing. 550D it is. May wait until it becomes discontinued as its been out for a couple of years so may be discounted in the near future.

Had a little go with my macro lens today.
Quite tricky to get to grips with first off but I'm getting the hang of it. Can't wait for 3-4 weeks time when the insects start showing themselves too.

Had a go at droplet refraction tonight.
Bit hit and miss as I was experimenting with droplet sizes, angles and depth, but I got a couple of decent pics from a first attempt.
I basically got a glass shelf, stood it up on about 6-8 DVD boxes, put a picture on my ipad underneath, sprayed it with water from an old bath spray cleaner bottle and snapped away.

I went out for half an hour today while it was sunny to see what difference RAW pics would make and to give my new 100mm macro a run out.
