End of the tax disc. End of the transferable tax disc.

Stumbled upon this earlier.

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/vehicle-tax-changes" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I allready knew the tax disc was ending in october. But I didnt know that the tax on a car will end immediately when you sell the car. and the new keeper will have to re tax the car their self before it can be used. Whats the point in that!!

I don't see it as a pain, just claim your refund if applicable and that's that.
Glad the silly paper on the windshield is going :)

I agree on the unsightly disc going being a good thing. How does it work when you buy the car though?
Buy a car privately then how do you get to tax it before you can leave?

Not really don't you think? I see it as a bit like the current system for insurance... Before you get a car privately, you have to make sure you are insured to drive it away. Perhaps it would just be an online system for tax, once you know you are going to go for the car, you'll settle online. Or it might be an automated phoneline... Who knows!
More police cars will be having ANPR now though :D.

I won't insure a car on the off chance of buying it though. I either temp insure it if the insurer is closed or transfer it over before I leave lol.

I think it's shit!!! Not that I am I. The habit but how do you report an untaxed vehicle??? Get rid of the tax and put on fuel would be the fairer way

They're on about introducing monthly car tax (eventually) - one of the showstoppers for this was the processing issues/costs of when a car changes owner.

Of course it's about the money and they will probably charge more for the privilege of paying monthly!

EDIT: meant to say tax, not insurance :rolleyes:

Scenario.............

I had a Passat taxed until 31/3/15. I saw a Scirocco in a garage I liked. I had a cherished plate on the Passat. I buy the Scirocco but tell the garage that since its 2 weeks until the start of the new month,Ill wait until then until it gets taxed. In the meantime, the Dealer starts the transfer...........

.............the process takes approx 2 x weeks to get done.......so.....I cannot tax the Scirocco until the 1st of February. I cannot get the month of February refunded on the Passat as the transfer is 'in process'. Seems like a 'win win' for the Government. I am paying tax on a car for February coming out of the garage and for a car for February sitting in a garage. Farce :no:
