Which petrol for the R?

Post by RoccoTom »

After nearly 300 miles in my new R, it's time to fill the tank for the first time...

What petrol are people using in their R? I know the sticker on the fuel cap recommends 98 (or super unleaded), but surely 95 will still do the job - especially if you drive the car economically? I have easy access to 95 unleaded, but not necessarily to 98.

I wouldn't put 95 in.
Stick to what the cap says. 98.
Or super.

The cap does say '98 (95)', as if to suggest that 95 would do. The guy at the dealership also said 95 is perfectly fine, but just thought I'd see what the drivers themselves reckon... Any noticeable difference in the way it drives?

Glad you mentioned Shell V-Power, as there's a petrol station on my commute which has that. So you'd recommend it?

Oh it's the best by far IMHO it's just chuffing expensive here.

Sainsburys super unleaded works well and is £1.04. Vpower is £1.15 and that's just a bit much for every single fillup

Any turbo petrol car will benefit from a higher octane fuel

Personally I switch between Sainsburys SUL or BP Ultimate, just depends what is handiest.

Unfortunately in Northern Ireland we do not have access to Tesco Momentum or Shell V-Power :(

95 ron is ok for the car but ideally 97+ is better for performance and economy.

Also, if you bought the car for economy, you made the wrong choice!! Fuel is cheap as it has ever been in the last 6 years lol

Shell V Power only for me too! It's the only fuel I've used in my last 3 cars.

V power only, its worth the extra.

Why buy a car like this if you want to save a few pennies and not treat it to the right fuel.

Even on my 2.0 TSI GT I notice the difference between shell unleaded and shell vpower, throttle is less 'lumpy' and I've definitely gained 2-3mpg since using it (all recorded in an Excel spreadsheet ;) ).

Nothing but shell V power for my R or my old GT. It occasionally gets something else if I get caught out, and if that happens and there's no super, it gets a 10er of the usual crap which is enough to get me to a shell garage haha

V power on every fill up, if I'm away then will use any other 98+ but the car fills happier on shell.

Super unleaded only. You otherwise run the risk of pre-ignition (knocking) which can ultimately damage the engine (pistons, cylinder wall etc.).

Engine has knock sensors which retard the ignition to prevent "pinking" if 95 grade fuel is used.
