Slow cranking/ engine didn’t turn over the first time

Post by tommy »

My engine didn’t turn over (slow cranking) the first time after we had a 2 hours break at Bath (drove from London). I tried again after 10 second and this time I tapped the accelerator during cranking and the car started. Drove fine all the way to Bristol and stopped for dinner. After that, we had a slow cranking again but the engine eventually turned over without tapping the accelerator.

Any advice please?

The battery was measured at 12.2V when key is in.
When the engine is running, this measurement is 14.2V.

I was told the 12.2V is a bit low? Is it new battery time? It is only 2 years old...

Slow cranking does point towards a faulty battery. Based on the voltages you posted, the alternator is charging Ok. What's important is the voltage and current from the battery while under load when cranking. Your local fast fit place will be able to test the battery under load. Make sure you resolve the issue as it's only going to get worse as the ambient temps drop.

Thanks Cuprabob. I’m going to get a new battery. It happened last year this time September to October when the temperature dropped. I didn’t check the voltage back then unfortunately. But it’s been starting/running fine until yesterday, well a couple of days ago it had a very brief hesitated start - didn’t think much about it.

What battery would you recommend please? I’m looking at the 096 Bosch S3?

When I replaced mine I went for the Bosch S5 096 and have no complaints.

Just be aware after you replace the battery the ESP light and the steering light will remain on until the car is driven a small distance while the steering angle sensor calibrates.

Please see link here. This is what happened this evening after the car has been parked all day. The car started fine this morning.
