£1000 on a rear main seal issue and still leaks

Post by Magic36 »

Hi guys, I’m new to the forum and was hoping some knowledgable folk could shed some light on an issue I’m having with my poorly roc :(

It’s an 09 gt tsi model with the dsg gearbox, currently sitting on around 92k miles. Basically I noticed a few months ago that I was getting drips of oil coming from in between the engine and gearbox. At first I wasn’t too worried but the problem persisted and progressively became worse. This was also coupled with the gearbox struggling to change at low speeds after about 20 minutes of driving
After a bit of research I concluded the rear main seal was leaking, and had this confined by a local mechanic. I was also told that the struggle in changing gear would be a failing dual mass flywheel.... and also a dsg service for good measure... £1000 later and both have been replaced.

So now to the disappointing part. I picked up the car and handed over the money (holding back the tears  ) but happy that the situation was finally solved. Drove it for 15 minutes with a grin on my face that I had a reliable car again, made it into my local town and got stuck in traffic. At this point I noticed it was really struggling to change between 1st and 2nd, almost stalling at points. 5 minutes later and it was almost as if it was crunching itself into gears.

Once home I realised that there was a small drip of oil inbetween the emgine and gearbox again! I contacted the mechanic and he told me this could be residual oil left over from when it leaked before..... also that the struggle I’m changing gears is that the dsg needed to be re set and learn to change again.

The car was returned, gearbox re set and was told there was no longer any signs of an oil leak....

Drive my car into work this morning and as if he magic there is now a small patch of oil and a drip coming from the same area.... No problem with gear changes but I only drove a few miles down the road and after everything I’m sure it would struggle again once driven for over 20 minutes.

£1000 lighter and no closer to a solution I’m stuck on what to do. Have I just shelled out a load of cash for no reason? And where do I stand with the garage, as my problem is still there! My only thought is that it’s the pcv valve messing up the crank case pressure and once the car is warm the oil is getting through the seal and onto the clutch, causing the struggle in shifting......

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

Id take the car back mate.

Ive the same leak on mine. took it to the mechanic and he said, if it gets worse then he will do it but said it worth changing the dsg clutches while the gearbox is off.

Id change the PCV aswell just to eliminate any other issues that may be causing the leak.

Keep us posted!

Hi buddy, thanks for the reply!

I was told by one garage that the clutch would need doing and by the other that the dual mass flywheel would need replacing...... When the garage removed the gearbox he told me the clutch was roughly 60% worn and probably had another 40k in it still. To restrain the budget a little I didn’t have that replaced and went with the dual mass flywheel.

The mechanic has now conveniently gone on holiday for 10 days, so I will start by replacing the pcv myself and keeping n eye on the leak.

I’ll just have to try and find the right pcv.... I’m guessing they will be different for different ages / engine codes?

I think the PCV are generic tbh but worth going to VW and given them the Vin number and part number.

I'm still not convinced the clutch on DSG needs to be changed so early. I guess there is no telling unless you strip the clutch down but most people run stage 2 etc for years without having issues with worn clutches.

Have a look on the PCV and there should be a part number on there somewhere

Ok so on the plus side there no longer seems to be the leak!

However.... I have been driving the car for a few weeks now and the shifting problem seems to be getting worse, especially when hot. After more investigations on the forums it seems to be a mechatronics issue..... Now I’m in a bit of a sticky situation. My original reason for getting the car fixed was so that I could sell it on with a clean conscience, I could never sell a car which I knew had issues as I would never personally want to be in that situation. Now I am already £1000 down and still have a car with issues :( I can’t afford to spend any more big money on the car but I don’t know if it will be worth anything with a gearbox issue :(

The mech unit can be repaired for a couple hundred quid by an independent Gb specialist. have a browse on google

I think if you go through VW then you can expect to pay thousands. I think 1-2 for a replacement unit. something stupid.
