MYSTERIOUS OIL LEAK!!

Post by Garylikeslemons »

My Friend has a 1.4TSI 122bhp scirocco.

Yesterday he told me it has dumped a load of oil, no lights on dash, still runs fine, but obviously something was up and he didn't want to drive around with no oil.
I got the car hometo have a look after putting some more oil in it. This is where it starts to be annoying... with oil in, running it up stationary you can't see any leak, putting a few revs on, same again, which would tell me it does it when its under a load? but then again how would it have a huge puddle under it when hes parked up?... I got the car up on some axle stands with the belly plates off and the wheels, I could see oil was all around the side of the engine where the pulleys are, seemed right below the oil filter, although i couldn't see it physically leaking from there. It was also all over the right hand side drive shaft and had clearly splashed everywhere, it was on the brake servo and all the pipes in that area. Anyhow i cleaned it up, i took the suspect oil filter off, found an O-ring that was a bit chewed up, replaced it and thought i was onto a winner, cleaned it up, topped up the oil ran it up and couldn't see any more signs of leaking.

He finished work today, goes out in the car, rings me an hour or so later, it's done it again, exactly the same, rear left of the engine (as you're facing it) is caked in oil, the fan belt etc, cleaned it up topped it up and got him home.

Will have another look tomorrow... Is there anything I'm missing? or any things i could check before sending him back to the garage that done the timing? I understand underneath it on the drive isn't the best of methods but I'd like to think I'm competent enough to have found the cause! hard to find a leak when you can't see it leaking which no one seems to understand!

Just to throw this out here now, the timing chain was done on it a week prior, with the car being used daily and not affected up until now... coincidence?

Any help will be appreciated!!

If the timing chain was not done by a dealership - then it's possible seals and gaskets were not replaced.

The chain cover housing must have the sealing gasket replaced when ever removing the cover. If it wasn't it can leak as it can easily be bent upon removing the chain cover.
There is also an oil seal for the pulley side of the crankshaft, this could have been damaged on removal / installation.

Job was done by a VAG specialist so I would of liked to of thought they know what they’re doing. Thanks for the reply
