timing chain rattle

Post by cookie9561 »

Was hoping someone could advise me,have a 59 2.0 tsi with 49000 mls.It rattles on cold start up and after leaving it 2 or 3 hours, been to my local dealer who quoted over a 1000 quid insisting the chain is replaced along with the tensioner.Could i replace the tensioner only or are they right.I have a vw specalist were i am but they closed till mon.The car has only part service history with the previous owner going to vw dealer and last 2 services done by myself at independent garage.I dont think leaving it as it is would be a good idea, would a good independent garage be just as good, any advice would be much appreciated

Same situation with mine. 80k km, rattling noise at start up. The noise was made by the stretched chain, and now both chain and chain tensioner will be changed.
It is not cheap, but definitely beats changing the engine if the chain brakes.
Regarding cost, try searching on forum for chain issues - I remember that some time ago, there was a topic regarding cost. I would like to be able to help you, but since I am not from uk, the price of the chain and tensioner I will pay at the vw dealership is irrelevant.

Should be able to get the tensioner changed for between £300 and £400 at a good idie. Maybe a bit more for chain as well. It is about 2 hours labour. VW tend to replace all parts associated with the chain such as cogs and will often include the water pump as a precaution as they say it can spring a leak on high mileage engines and is cheaper to do while the engine is stripped down.

well i went down to kenny,s the inverness vw specialists, explained that was getting rattling noise first thing in morning and after leaving car for 2 or 3 hours.Explained
i thought it might be coming from timing chain and might be the chain stretched due to tensioner problems.Guy behind reception said i will go and speak to kenny about it.I was speechless when guy came back and said kennys not touching it,you need to go to a main dealer to get it done,i asked why was that, guy said i dont know, kenny just said he was not touching a chain as he had,nt done one before,i stood there bemused at this and the guy just shrugged his shoulders and said sorry but kenny,s not interested mate will need to be main dealer that does it,couldnt believe that was his response from a guy thats been doing vw,s for probaly 25 years or so.Way they were speaking was that they never had a prob with timing chain before as he had,nt done one ???

I was quoted £575 for tensioner and water pump at a VW dealer so would have thought 900 was a bit over the top. Some of the other members are vw mechanics so should be able to provide better info.

I looked into this a little bit and here is what I found out. To change the tensioner it should be 3-4 hours labour plus parts.
After speaking to someone who has done this themselves they stated you should only need to change the tensioner and the pulley bolt (which is a stretch bolt). If you're careful the cover can be removed and cleaned up and refitted.
Price for parts from vw main dealer is as follows:
Tensioner: part no: 06K 109 467K - £43.38
Cover (which includes pulley seal and bung): part no: 06H 109 210 AG -£73.42
Gasket sealant: part no: D174 003 M2 (80ml) -£34.94
Cover bolts (x15) :part no: N910 967 02 -20 pence each (£3 total)
All prices include VAT.
I don't have part no or price for pulley bolt! Shouldn't be much.
The chain will need changing if stretched but you will only know once visible.

Hope this information helps, I haven't followed it up as I have vw extended warranty and am not sure if I have the rattle anyway.

The Internet is a brilliant tool but sometimes it can make you worry unnecessarily!!
I hope this answers some of your questions.

many thanks to you gaz R,your reply has been really helpful and informative. Its people like yourself that makes being a member of these forums a must.I defenately have the rattle no doubt about it and thats why i need to get it done asap.Think vw are a disgrace though, that customers have to pick the bill up when this is a design fault is just wrong. If the car wasn't so good to drive i would probaly have traded car in.I had honda,s for 15 years and never had a single problem other than servcing and wear and tear items, mind you they never drove as well as the scirocco lol,you take your choices as they say, thanks again

I'm in the same boat I bought car fromvw 1.5 months ago told them about the problem exactly they came back and said we think it's your fuel pump but we can't replace it as it's not failed yet

I know for a fact it's the tensioner it's identical to videos I've seen

So I'm worrying if 've will cover a new engine if it goes under warrenty as I have 12 months 've warrenty but states a 2k flame limit :/
