Scirocco 2.0 TSI GT DSG fuel economy

Post by greenmamba »

Hi guys, new here! I've had two Rocs, a 1.4 TSI manual that I drove for a week before I got hit by a car cycling, and more recently a 2.0 TSI GT DSG which I bought as I can no longer drive manuals. I'm absolutely loving the car, but just wondering about fuel economys...the 2.0 TSI is quoted as 38 MPG combined, and on honest john I believe it gets around 34 MPG combined. However, I'm getting significantly lower than that - a long motorway run gets me about 34 sitting at 70 with cruise control, and around town driving very gently I get 24. I believe the car's running a bit rich as I get a belt of black smoke out the back if I accelerate hard - is this a common problem at all and could my local VW garage fix it or am I just experiencing normal fuel economy for a 2 litre?
Cheers!

I cant comment on the dsg version but my manual 2.0 tsi gets 42 on a long motorway run and just over 30mpg round about town. It all depends how u drive mind u. I'd say ur figures are a bit on the low side but i have heard that new cars take a while to settle down into the higher mpg's.

I have a manual 2.0 TSI and on a long motorway journey get around 40, around town 32.

Where do you fill up?

I only fill up at shell. Maybe try filling up with some V-Power, I think it makes a difference

yeah i know it'll be driving dependent, but long journeys certainly I sit at 70/75, no hard acceleration etc so was expecting 40s! I might try a tank of V-power or something, so far I've just been using standard unleaded.

As well as driving style, ambient temperature can also have a big impact on economy

Using shell normal. I get 38-42 mpg motorway depending on how fast.
General day to day get around 34-38 mixed driving and I give it few flat out runs a day! :)
But mine is manual! But you're mpg sounds low.

Yes - that is very low, as others have indicated 40+ is easily achievable on motorway runs, mine was reading 46mpg yesterday but I was restricted to sitting behind lines of traffic at 45-50 mph.

Mine is also a manual but I don't think there is any additional fuel penalty for the DSG.

I guess it depends what speed you're doing :)

I normally get about 36mpg on the motorway!
I've tootled along behind a lorry for many miles when I was way too early to be somewhere and got about 42mpg out of it.

My daily commute mpg is probably something in the high 20s.

I generally sit at 70 on a motorway run, so would be expecting something in the early 40s...I got 34.5 on a 160 mile run from london primarily on motorways (98%) sitting at 70.

Hi Greenmamba,

Don't like to scare you but have you had the infamous inlet manifold problem on your car?
The reason i ask is because one of the symptoms of this is poor fuel economy.
When I had my inlet manifold replaced I noticed a difference in fuel economy & more consistent performance from my car.

Had mine 6 months, seems to average 29-31 on daily urban commute, and 35ish on open roads/ motorway cruising.

300 miles to the tank for me,

Don't know what that works out at though, depends when the red light comes on and how long it takes to come on I suppose.

How would I know about the inlet manifold...would I have to take it to a garage? Are there any other symptoms that might suggest it?
