iPod issues

Post by RickGT »

I'm hoping someone can help me with a problem I'm having with my RCD510 & my iPod 32gig
Please excuse my lack of knowledge I've only had the car a week but when connect the iPod to the black cable in the centre armrest it comes up on the screen "no device found" - the car is a 59 reg if that helps any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using the USB connector linked to the MDI unit? If you are try the dedicated ipod one.

Rick you should not be using your white Apple cable. There should have been another mdi cable with the car identical to the usb one but that has an ipod connector instead, as your car is second hand it has probably been mislaid, you can pick one up on eBay for iirc less than a tenner.

Using the Apple cable into the usb mdi cable will not work

There were updates for the RCD510 unit with ipods that fix stopping between tracks. My dealer updated it from a CD they had in when I had the 3yr Service. I've not used my ipod in the car since I stopped using it. I prefer my favourite CDs instead. Pure old school!
BTW, Some of these units can have the Reverse Camera upgrade if they have the video port on them. Only way to find out is to take it out.

Macman, great info but not really to do with Ricks problem, if he gets problems with playback or wants to look into a reversing camera I'm sure he'll come back & ask, he needs the ipod mdi cable, we don't want to confuse things too much when he's only just bought the car

Need to know basis right Trix? Personally when I bought mine I asked what quirks it has. I only wish I knew what I know now. He may not have time to trawl the forum for treasure. It took me ages to discover all the in and outs and has cost me money in parts that I didn't need (including the Dealers standard pollen cabin filter). I'd welcome a fuller discussion upon issues to know what I may come across. I'd feel frustrated if I kept coming up to hurdles to fix on the same issue.

(I will get told off now as its not in the thread title - lol)
DSG oil needs to be hot to work well. After 30,000miles it can start to behave like that as mine did. Mine also needed the DSG update to fix going into revs around corners. I had to ask the dealer to do the update during the 3rd year full service else they wouldn't have done it. Has it had the Full Service with DSG oil change?

Sorry if I get you in trouble macman - if I remember correctly of the 3 services carried out on the car (including the one 4 days before I picked it up) the dsg oil hasn't been changed since new but the book pack is in the glovebox so I can't confirm at this stage

I got my 61 Scirocco on Saturday (1.4 TSI). With a 510 radio?
Initially I had the same problem as others in that couldn't connect but found this was because I was using the white cable - so contacted my dealer and they kindly gave me the proper cable tonight & I was assured that it was as simple as just plugging in my iPod or iPhone...

I tried this and my iPod displays Media-In and sometimes comes up as 'no medium connected' when I press the media button on the radio and sometimes (rarely) it shows the track name, album and artist but doesn't play the track (the track time is frozen in the point I plug it in whilst the track keeps going on my iPod!). If I press play on the radio it just beeps at me.

I consulted my manual which suggested that I should update my iPod - I tried & no success.

I also tried to plug my iPhone 4S in (which was updated yesterday) and all it does with that is charge - on pressing media it's 'no medium connected' and no other option.

I've restored factory settings on radio just in case. That did nothing to help.

Any ideas or suggestions??

Thank you :-)

Was the cable they gave you like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-MEDIA-IN-I ... 0766162126" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and not the USB type.
If so then it sounds like a fault with the media in. Back to the dealers I'm afraid

Let me expand on macman's post.
You need to update the firmware on your RCD510 to see if it helps. Have a read in this thread and see if it's any good. The updates are posted up on the myGTi website with instructions.

I have issues with my ipod connection, but nowhere as bad. My firmware is up to date as well
