Semi-automatic manual gearbox

Post by AlexBritton15 »

Hi everyone,

I recently took my manual 2015 Scirocco 1.4 TSi to the Alps for some skiing. While driving up a particularly steep hill in second, i floored the accelerator and noticed that my manual gearbox managed to change down into 1st for a brief moment to give me a bit more power whilst accelerating up the hill. After noticing this i described it to a few people who all said i was imagining it and it is not possible with a manual gearbox. Any explanations or am i losing the plot? Thanks

Nah not with a manual box.
Are you sure it wasn't just wheelspin?

As said, it didn't shift down by itself. It was wheelspin :)

it 100% wasn’t wheelspin. Not sure what it was. I can vividly remember the engine sounding like it was changing down and the MFD display changing from saying i was in gear 2 to gear 1 (and it wasn’t just the arrow pointing to 1 to recommend changing down). I know, it sounds bizzare.

If you are certain it wasn't wheelspin then your clutch is slipping. If my memory serves me right the gearchange indicator uses rpm and speed based on gearing for gear value as opposed to a switch in each gear therefore it can be fooled. One thing is certain the car didn't change gear by itself.
