Buzzing sound from turbo(?)

Post by vladandrei51 »

From past 3 weeks I've been hearing a buzzing sound every time my car is on, including idle, except when engine braking

Sound comes from here , i'd describe it as a somewhat metallic buzzing

Tried to record it revving the engine up in neutral but is very subtle in the recording: link

Car's performance/MPG is not affected.

All mechanics I talked to said to drive like this and if things go worse then bring the car in. I don't want to wait until/if car blows up :hyper: I was hoping some of you experienced something similar

Car is 09 1.4 TSI twincharged 160 hp

That's coming from the exhaust/supercharger area.

Probably just the heat shield bracket rattling

A guy told me that's where the wastegate is and most likely a rod needs to be tighten up.

Is it possible to be the bracket that's rattling if the sounds stops immediately when engine braking?

I don't know what to say about the wastegate rod... Please check your turbocharger. Remove the intake hose and visually inspect the blade. If everything seems in place, try to check the rotor play(left, right, in, out). After everything checks out, you can look at the wastegate actuator. Maybe you're lucky, maybe you're not :D

We get wastegate rattle on the 2.0 TSI engines, wasnt sure if was an issue with these.

I could be something as simple as something rubbing on something else when the engine is running.

Take of the heatshield and start the engine to see if you can pinpoint where it coming from

That's the plan :) After the holidays are over I'm going to take the heat-shield off check for what's rattling.

If it's indeed the wastegate rod rattling, the fix is a simple bolt tightening or something more complex?

Mine rattles but haven't looked are fixing it as the turbo is coming off soon.

I'm not sure if the actuator are is rattling or the mounting bracket to the turbo.

Get some pics when your doing it
