Wheel Refurbishment advice

Post by edwheels »

Hi all,

My Scirocco has the 18" Turbines.... I don't know what it is about this car - the low profile (lack of rubber!), the width of the car (wide compared to previous few cars) or just the poorish side/rear visibility but I am ashamed to have systematically scratched up the nearside wheels on kerbs over the last couple of years - more than on any other car I've owned. It's gutting - hate this.

The last time was the worst - low car park kerb hidden from view took a large chunk of the tyre's rim protector out too (had it checked out - it's cosmetic damage, but hate how this looks) and scratched the rear wheel too.

So, in the next couple of months I am going to sort out the wheels and probably replace the two rear tyres (pair) even though they are only 60% worn.... and then be careful.

Does anyone have any advice on wheel refurbishment. If had just nearside wheels sorted would the colour match be 100% the same the offside?

Any recommendations for companies who do this, mobile or otherwise.... Herts / Bucks / Beds / NW London all possible for me....

Finally - a bit off topic, but after the last mishap, I was briefly thinking of going for 17" wheels and tyres as less vulnerable. Is there a better handling / ride with these over the 18"? Would you buy then from VW? On reflection it's unlikely I'd do this (the 18"s do look right) but has anyone ever done so?

Cheers :-)

I've used the Wheel Specialist a couple of times and was very satisfied on both occasions. I'd recommend them.
