Do you regret buying a 2.0 Petrol?

Post by mydogisbald »

Hi,

I've been looking to buy a Scirocco for a few months now. Was going to go for a 170 diesel r-line but have decided there is no advantage buying a derv as I don't do the miles.

So, I've decided on a 2.0 petrol. I've got a budget for either a newish (about 3-6 months) r-line 220 with up to 6k on or a full on 'R' but it would be about 2 or 3 years old with 20-30k on it.

Obviously it would be nice to have a newer car but would I be missing out on the performance of the R?

Don't want to buy a car and always be thinking 'what if'. I haven't driven an R. You can't miss what you never had lol.

Cheers, J

Hey dude. I went for the Diesel R-Line last year.. What a car from my previous vehicles it's a massive leap! Don't do that many miles myself but I fell in love after the test drive! However I'm constantly feeling now, after only a year.. I need an R. Won't happen now for a few years but when I see one on the road I wish I had shopped about for an R.

I had my mind set on the 1.4 but after test driving a 2.0 TSi GT I knew I had to have it. It has more than enough power for my needs so it all comes down to personal preference. The R does look better tho!

I personally went for the 1.4 160 tsi for insurance purposes (I'm 21) and I love it, fuel consumption isn't bad and it can move for a 1.4! Looking to get it remapped ASAP to give it about 210 bhp. I think a mapped 2.0 would be close to an R :) good luck!

a revo mapped 1.4 160 puts out 220hp and 220 lb torque. Due to the nature of the power curve does 0-60 in approx 5.7 (same as an R) and returns 45 mpg on the motorway and 30-35mpg easily round town. Theres not much hot hatch wise that has beaten my 1.4 off the line...

I have a 2.0 TSI GT and it's got plenty of power!!

I don't think you'd be missing out by not going for the R

I dunno if this helps but my mapped 170 gt diesel is awesome, spins the wheels in third cos the torque is immense yet if I go a hundred mile run up north at 75-80 I get 48mpg average! Had it up at 53 if I drive at the limit. I end up doin 85-90 tbh but still get well over 40mog.
It just makes me think unless you are of the opinion (that some of my mates are) that diesels are for trucks and tractors only then why would you get the 2.0tsi that is only a little higher bhp but much worse mpg.
I spose if you mapped the petrol you'd be way beyond what you'd get out of the diesel but I feel the 200ish in mine is plenty given it's only front wheel drive.

The R is the much more complete looking car.

It is a very capable machine if you like driving its what you need end of.

The r definitely looks the best! Love the front bumper, good that it's unique to the r too makes it a bit more special.

That's interesting, I wonder how the r compares to a golf gti then. Must be better chassis and brakes on the R rather than just engine.

I was looking for ages and decided on a diesel. Don't do really high miles and really regret it now! Only a 140 and the power is nowhere near enough. I'll be selling and replacing with a 2.0 tsi within the next month or so!

Get it remaped then?
Best of both worlds. Around 170 bhp loads of torque with good mpg.?

The noise of the 2.0TSI is worth the extra $£ in petrol in my opinion and i only do ~10,000 miles a year so i don't need a diesel :D
Also on long journeys 40mpg is pretty good.

I thought about it, but the noise and being able to rev just lures me too much!
