Is this a sign of the VW ECU mod having broken something?

It is a 170 diesel, from 2012. The software was "upgraded" about 8 months ago.

The car drives OK at present.

You need to get the car scanned and see why the Engine Management Light is on.

It may or may not be related to the software update.

Not likely the software if the light has only just came on.
As said above, get it scanned to find out the issue

VW say they need the car all day to find out what the issue is.

There are many reports of something called an emissions control valve failing after some period of time; much shorter than it should fail after normally, without the software mod. That sort of thing could make a car pretty hard to sell...

There have been reports of EGR valves failing prematurely after the emissions update and although VW deny any connection with the emissions update, they are offering a 2 year warranty on specific components for 2 years from the date of the update under the "Trust Building Measure"

On the link below click on the down arrow and click on Trust Building Measure.

Many thanks Bob.

Of course VW will deny it - it's their job to prevent their business suffering unduly :)

As an aside, are there any indications of what offers VW make to people who take legal action, on the basis that their diesel car "cannot be given away" at present? I heard they have offered people a petrol version at some big discount. The Q is what legal action is necessary to achieve that. Presumably just walking into a VW dealer and saying "I will sue VW" won't achieve anything. From what I have seen in another area (aviation) it takes a credible action i.e. engaging a lawyer.
